RIP J.D. Salinger

Oh my.  He lived to be 91.

I don't think it was a very happy life... so his passing makes me sad in a way another's might not.  He never expected or wanted Catcher in the Rye to explode the way it did... and I'm sure it's a dubious distinction to have penned such a controversial work.  A book that shouldn't really have been that controversial, IMHO.

Edit:  In other news, I just found out Zelda Rubinstein has died as well.

You may remember her as the extremely tiny woman with the child's voice who played the psychic in Poltergeist.  My affection for her knows no bounds, so I'm paying a thought to her today as well.

I really do need to read that book; it's such a classic. But for some reason, I find that I always hate those books, the ones that garner so much attention and end up becoming the stand-bys for middle school English classes; sometimes they feel so over-used and exploited. It seems like it's the kind of book you either love or hate.
